Frozen Evaporator Coil

Finding ice on your indoor coil or the refrigerant lines seems strange for an AC that's supposed to keep you cool, but a frozen evaporator coil is a common problem - and it's almost always a sign that something else is restricting the system. It leaves you with warm air until it's fixed.

A coil freezes when it gets too cold and the moisture on it turns to ice instead of draining away. The most frequent trigger is restricted airflow. A dirty air filter, closed or blocked vents, a weak blower motor, or dirty coils all reduce the warm air passing over the evaporator, so it drops below freezing and ices up. In many homes, a neglected filter is the entire cause.

Low refrigerant is the other major reason. When the charge is low - which means a leak - the pressure in the coil drops, the coil runs colder than designed, and ice forms. Once a coil is iced over, the system can't cool at all - the block of ice insulates the coil and blocks airflow, so you get warm air and often water on the floor as it thaws. Running the compressor while the coil is frozen is genuinely risky: liquid refrigerant can return to the compressor and cause expensive damage. That's why the first step is to stop cooling and let it thaw.
