AC Not Turning On
An air conditioner that won't turn on at all is unsettling, especially during a Houston heat wave - but a completely dead system is often caused by something as simple as a tripped breaker or a thermostat issue. Here's what's usually behind it and what we check.
Start with power and controls. A tripped breaker in the electrical panel, a blown fuse in the outdoor disconnect, or a thermostat with dead batteries can all leave the system totally unresponsive. Many air handlers also have a float switch on the condensate drain that shuts the system off on purpose when the drain backs up - a built-in safety feature that's very common in humid Houston attics. If your AC quit and the drain pan looks full, that switch may be doing its job.
If power is present and the thermostat is calling for cooling but nothing happens, the trouble is usually electrical inside the equipment. A failed capacitor, a burned contactor, or a bad transformer can prevent the compressor and blower from starting. Sometimes you'll hear a faint hum or click from the outdoor unit as it tries and fails to start - a classic sign of a weak capacitor or a seized motor.
Less often, the thermostat itself has failed, or a wire has corroded or come loose, breaking the low-voltage signal that tells the system to run. Rodents, age, and moisture all take a toll on the thin control wiring over time. Because a "dead" AC can stem from anything between the breaker and the compressor, methodical testing is the fastest way to pinpoint it.

Beyond that, resist the urge to repeatedly flip a tripped breaker back on - a breaker that trips again is warning you of a fault, and forcing it can damage equipment or create a hazard.
